Outer ear Infection
Outer ear infections include infections of the pinna, or the ear canal (otitis externa). This may be treated with ear drops or other topical therapies or might require antibiotics by mouth depending on the severity of the infection.
Patients with diabetes may be at added risk for certain types of outer ear infections.
Swimmer’s ear is a type of outer ear infection (Otitis Externa).
Middle Ear Infection
Although more common in children, middle ear infections can occur at any age. Depending on the clinical scenario, these infections may require treatment with antibiotics or possibly steroids .
On occasion a mini surgical procedure called myringotomy with or without tube placement may be recommended for recurring middle ear infections or for recalcitrant middle ear fluid on the heels of middle ear infection.
